CareSource marks 40th anniversary of Medicaid
INDIANAPOLIS, July 26, 2005 – CareSource, the fastest-growing Medicaid managed health care plan in Indiana, will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Medicaid this week. Medicaid, the state and federal health insurance program for the poor, was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on July 30, 1965.
CareSource has been a part of Indiana’s Medicaid program only since January, but already serves more than 60,000 members. CareSource provides care through Hoosier Healthwise, Indiana’s program for low-income families, children and pregnant women. Medicaid managed care is playing an increasingly important role in Indiana. In January, managed care became mandatory for Hoosier Healthwise recipients in 13 counties, but by November, it will be mandatory across the state.
“CareSource is pleased to celebrate the positive impact of the Medicaid program on the families and children who are our members,” said President and CEO Pamela B. Morris. “Although we only entered Indiana in January, we have been serving Medicaid consumers in Ohio for more than 16 years. Our top priority is the health of our members.”
In Indiana, Medicaid covers more than 827,000 people, including 1 in 7 state residents. The program covers low-income families, children, pregnant women, and the aged, blind and disabled. Most Medicaid recipients live below the federal poverty level and have no other access to health care.
